Course Outline
The curriculum for grade 9 is the beginning step toward success on the grade 11 State Regents Assessment.
We will read much from Literature and Language and The Language of Literature, the district literature books-as well as independent reading of novels. English 9 students develop a firm understanding of the use of literary elements and techniques as they read fiction and nonfiction. Our introduction to Shakespeare is accessed through "Romeo and Juliet". Vocabulary will be an integral part of reading and responding to literature.
Ninth grade students are expected to strengthen their writing skills through intensive practice. Our writing curriculum will use the basic writing process plus the incorporation of the use of six traits writing-voice, ideas, organization, sentence fluency, word choice and conventions.
The grade 9 curriculum also entails a more intensive study of the newspaper.
